A Day in the Life Of: Talent Resourcer

A Day in the Life Of: Talent Resourcer 1

“I genuinely love chatting to people, I speak to such a variety of individuals with different interests in the industry – no day is the same.”

We had a quick chat with Mel Thompson, YFs Talent Resourcer here at YF, and asked her to describe her average day, the highs and lows in the world of recruitment, and most importantly, her favourite lunch choice.

What do you do as a Talent Resourcer?

I speak with candidates who have a special passion in the food and beverage industry, and are specifically interested in working within a start-up. I then work closely with candidates to help them find fantastic new roles or their first jobs straight from university.

I also run and organise our Graduate Assessment Day working closely alongside the rest of the team to ensure a great candidate experience.

What is your morning routine?

I love to start my day with a cuppa tea (has to be Yorkshire). Walking to the station I am always tempted to buy a coffee on route, most of the time succumbing to temptation, before settling down in the office to start the day ahead.

As a self-proclaimed foodie, what does your usual lunch look like?

I love a bit of sushi and Kombucha, it’s satisfying and delicious.

What is your favourite part of your role?

I genuinely love chatting to people, I speak to such a variety of individuals with different interests in the industry – no day is the same.

I also love organising and helping to deliver our Graduate Assessment Days. This is an opportunity for graduates to learn more about the industry specifically from a challenger brand perspective.

We host the day either at the YF HQ in South London, or online. It provides the candidates with a detailed look at the FMCG industry, the varied job roles available within a food and bev start-up, what responsibilities they entail, alongside CV / interview tips and tricks helping the candidates to feel prepared when applying for roles.

The day ultimately gives young talent a platform to showcase how great they are; seeing people’s personalities and enthusiasm for the industry shine through is a real highlight of what I do.

What do you find most challenging?

Keeping phone calls to the point and not going down a rabbit hole discussing our favourite PB brands.

What skills do you need to be a recruiter at YF?

A strong communicator most definitely; someone who truly enjoys listening as well as talking. A love for people, food and beverage, and getting stuck in is key.

What is different about working at YF?

It is truly a team, collective effort. No one is left to fend for themselves, and especially as a junior member of staff you are supported and encouraged to try new things, to work on yourself, develop and grow into the best version of you.

What attributes are you looking for in a new team member?

Enthusiasm, positivity and hunger (for success, as well as food).

Fancy joining us?

It is a very busy and exciting time for the Recruitment Team at Young Foodies.

We are on track to double the size of the recruitment business this year due to a high volume of incoming roles. So we are looking to scale our team significantly over the coming months.

An economic fork in the road

The economic shock to the UK (and much of the world’s) system has only just begun, and the FMCG industry is at the coalface. So, faced with some brutal economic facts, I thought I would lay out, if and how, we are seeing them play out in the innovative brand world.
